Especially as I didn't think he could reach some spots in the middle of his back where some of the scabs were. But when I took him to the vet, the vet said it was indeed Rupert doing the scratching/excessive grooming to himself, and that it was stress related but not uncommon in cats. The vet gave Rupert a steroid shot and that stopped the behavior for a loooong time and the scabs healed in short order. Now, about once every year or so, they show up again, he gets a shot and then all is well. But, as always, when in doubt check it out with your vet. My two cents worth :) Olivia -------------------------------------- Date sent: Tue, 13 Jan 1998 09:45:08 -0600 To: felvtalk@MailingList.net From: Cheryl DeSantis Subject: re: quality of life Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net At 08:43 PM 1/12/98 -0800, Lynn wrote: , > Being sick doesn't have to mean a life sentence of isolation and loniless. > I would rather them live a short life of happiness than a longer >life of unhappiness.......................Lynn(Stinker) > Lynn, My thoughts exactly! - Cheryl DeSantis Account Executive Bradmark, Inc. 4265 San Felipe Suite 800 Houston, TX 77027 800-621-2808 http://www.bradmark.com -------------------------------------- Date sent: Tue, 13 Jan 1998 12:46:16 -0500 From: Jenn Organization: The Chubb Corporation To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Lovejoy Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Katherine Pauline Alexander wrote: > > Irene, > > I have a question about the canned A/D...what is it? I just started my cat on it and he absolutely loves it!! Boy, have I missed a lot!! Last week, I had asked some questions regarding Immunoregulin and Interferon. Thanks for the feedback. When I was typing that e-mail, my Chloe had been showing NO signs of leukemia. However, later on that night (Tues), he didn't eat his dinner and he was gagging really weird. Thought it was a hairball, gave him a laxative. Wed morning - didn't eat and same gagging. Wed night - gave him a vitamin (pill). Boy, did he gag on that, without throwing up. It seemed like it had hurt him. Since he hadn't eaten, I figured on trying tuna fish (his absolute favorite thing in the whole world to eat). He came over to my feet as I was opening it up (good sign!). I put the dish on the flood, he sniffed it, and then walked away. I knew something was definitely wrong when he wouldn't eat that. Thurs took him to the vet. I had made an appointment anyway, to throw all this Immunoregulin & Interferon at her and have her order me some. Well, come to find out, Chloe had a fever of 102 and a LARGE lump in his throat - probably lymphosarcoma. Well, there goes the Immunoregulin. Thurs night, he got real bad. Wasn't opening his eyes, his coat looked so bland, he was real pale. Since he is my third and last kitty with this horrible disease, I decided to give him a change. I made an appointment with a surgeon on Friday. At first, I was real optimistic about it. The vet told me it could be as simple as something being lodged in his throat!! So, Fri, the surgeon took some x-rays and did a biopsy on him. Talk about the longest six hours of my life!! He came back with definite lymphosarcoma!! I couldn't believe how fast this came about. My husband and pretty much everyone else around me told me to put him down. I decided since he wasn't eating and this tumor was really hurting him, to do so. I made an appointment with my regular vet to have him euthanized on Sat. After a lot of crying and thinking, I decided to pick Chloe up from the surgeon instead of keeping him there overnight. This way I could spend a little bit more time with him before Sat morning. When I brought him home, he was still a little droggy from the anesthesia and other meds, and he still had the iv in him. Within minutes - he stood up, stumbled into the kitchen, and went to his dish!! Poor thing was so hungry. So, I tried to give him some tuna fish. Wouldn't eat it. Then, I thought the tuna thing was pretty stupid - would I eat tuna when I have a sore throat? So, I got a can of A/D (never tried it before) and opened it up. I remember some of you comparing it to baby food. Tried it - and guess what? He ate every single morsel!! Totally amazed me!! Sat morning, I woke up and he was on my bed purring and meowing (he hadn't been able to do that in days!) and wanting to be petted. Immediately called the vet. We still went there, but it definitely was not to do what I thought the day before. She felt around in his neck. They must've taken a big chunk of his tumor out. What a miracle this has been! Two days later and Chloe now is his normal self again! We've put him on Pred, hoping that the tumor won't grow or maybe even shrink! He's still eating that A/D cat food. Actually, he's eating more now than ever. Two cans a day! I'm sorry this is so long, but I thought that this story would enlighten those going through hard times right now. I know what it's like when your loved baby is sick - how every minute feels like an eternity and how every tiny, little improvement makes your heart leap! I am so happy that I had given him this chance. Best luck with your babies! It's amazing that he's recovered so well from such a horrible complication of FeLV. You may want to consider going with the treatment of Acemannan on top of the Interferon now. I've read several studies that indicate Acemannan's effects are remarkable in treating such tumors. Of course, you should speak in depth with your vet about this. At any rate, please keep us posted on Chloe's remarkable comeback. Best wishes to you and all on the list. In loving memory of Vyvyan: March 20, 1988 - August 15, 1997 James G. It is very high in protein, essential fats, and vitamins to provide energy and substance for tissue healing. It is also highly palatable to most pets. I never dreamed Merlin would come out of whatever hit him and paralysed him. I lost my sweet Kallie to lymposarcoma. Is there no chance of surgery or chemo? Anyway, great news. Merlin is a little off his food today which worries me, but maybe he is just having a bad day. He is busy bathing, so that's good. He likes the a/d also. Of course I worry every time he hiccups! give your baby a big hug from us! That is wonderful news. Thanks for the info about A/D cat food. My Tripod isn't as sick as I hear everyone else talking about. I am very thankful. However, I may get some to see if she likes it. It sounds like it may have added nutrients that she needs anyway. Yes, I am a graduate student at Middle Tennessee State University. No, we don't have a veterinary school or anything similar on campus. I was very disappointed. The nearest one is probably 2-3 hours away. Cheri Gardiner Kitty Chaz -------------------------------------- From: "Carol Gentry" To: Subject: Re: Sasha Date sent: Tue, 13 Jan 1998 16:22:59 -0800 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Well Barb and everyone, I just got back from the vets from taking Sasha. Actually, I had to make two trips. This new vet is not very optimistic but he decided to give Sasha a blood transfusion but of course with the rotten weather there wasn't anybody at the kitty blood bank so my stepson and I drove all the way back home and picked up my almost 14 pound healthy siamese and took him back so he can give blood to Sasha. I mentioned the two main drugs to him and he says it probably won't do her any good. Not what I wanted to hear. But when I go back to pick her up I am going to insist that he get me some and I'll do this myself. You know I always thought we were pretty progressive out here in the Northwest but as of late I wish I lived anywhere but here. He did mention some vets name, a woman, from Texas A and M, I think he said and he claims that she hasn't had very good luck using any of these things. Well I didn't want to make him mad right off and I figured that after she got the transfusion I would just be a demanding b----, and get what I wanted. This is so frustrating and maddening. If this is what I want, why should they care. If it doesn't work thats my lose, not theres. So please keep your fingers crossed that Sasha makes it through the transfusion and then hang onto your eardrums because you all might hear me whereever you are. I haven't given up I'm just mad. Please everyone, say a little prayer for Sasha tonight, she needs all the help she can get. Thanks again.
