# 1. Foreshadowing: Paul says he’s in the still water but can feel te whirl of the vortex sucking him into it. This foreshadows that he’s not in the direct line of fire, but knows the he’s not far from it.
Symbolism: When Paul says, “where the front begins we become on the instant human animals,” it symbolizes that they have to leave their humanity behind in order to survuve.The earth is the most important element to soldiers. Forced to bury themselves to stay alive.
# 2. Atomoshere: They’re near a group of trees that shelter them. The soldiers no longer look like men, but like columns. The noomlight reinds Paul of knights on horses.
Irony: The scene Paul wtnesses in rionic because he sees it as beautiful and captivating, but akward and heavy.
Foreshadowing: everything gets calm and quiet, and them French rockets go up and in the sky in illuinated green, red, and blue.
# 3 Symbolism: The cray of the horses resemble cries of men.
Foreshadowing: the horses screa louder, the landscape becomes indistinguisable.
Irony: Detering kills the horses, but says it’s vile to use them in the war.
