Rise of Democratic Ideas

-ideas came from Judaism and Christianity

-10 commandments established morals

-Old Testament prophets denounced tyranny and injustice and made people oppose unjust leaders

-Judaism and Christianity emphasize the dignity and self worth of every person

-First Christians were Jewish

-In Athens there is the first democracy

-Democracy is for the people

-Athens was the first direct democracy

-direct democracy is were people vote on all the laws

-only male citizen can vote

-Spartans take over Athens

-Socrates is the scapegoat

-Plato writes “The Republic” which describes the ideal state where only philosopher kings

-In Rome voters elected their officials

-high regard for Roman law

-In 451 the twelve tables were brought into existence

- In tables all citizen have a right to protection of the law

-Middle Ages the Roman government destroyed

-feudalism and Catholic Church provided order

-common forms of government were monarchy which is by a king or queen

-in 461 BC Greeks elected Pericles to the assinbly

-kept getting reelected yr. after yr.

-ruled for 32 yrs.

-new style of architecture

-drama glorified Greek god

-most of the dramas tragedies

-plays were not just entertainment but education

-displayed issues like war and gods

-a city of shop owners and artisians

-100,000 slaves in Athens

-riched ownered about 50 slaves poor 2 slaves

-women stayed home and if went out must wear vail

-in 431 Sparta marched through and burned food

-plague killed 1/3 of population

-404 Athens surrenders
