We met in the parking lot of a shopping center that was a couple of blocks from my home. He set it up that way, which helped to reinforce the notion that we were going as friends. I know it's clich, but I felt like a schoolgirl again that night. I felt awkward, unsure of myself, yet I felt safe with him. We had discussed before who would drive but had never made the decision. When I met him there, it was apparent that he was driving. He had a gift for me, a coffee mug with candy and teas and cocoas in it. Included was a card that said simply, "Thank-you for being you."
We went to a nearby restaurant for a snack before the movie. Steve shared some more about himself and he also made a comment about "wishing he were 15 years younger". I could have spent the evening there, talking with him, but we'd also made other plans. We saw "Apollo 13" that night, the one about the astronauts whose craft became disabled and the trek they made to get back to earth. And we actually watched the movie (no making out in the balcony!) .
It was pretty late when the movie was over, so Steve gave me a hug good-bye and I went home. I had to work the next day, although I wished I didn't. It was the last Saturday in October, when the clocks are set back an hour.
I guess you had to be there. It doesn't seem very exciting on paper, but I really enjoyed myself and looked forward to going out with him again. On the other hand, it isn't what you do, it's who you're with.
