| The Silmarillion: | |||||||||
| Why have I listed the Silmarillion first, you ask? Well, in actuality this is one of the very first books that Tolkien worked on. Back in WWI (I kid you not) Tolkien actually wrote one the first parts of the Silmarillion so if you want to get technical about it, Silmarillion's been around longer that the Hobbit. Basically what the Silmarillion is is a bunch of stories written somewhat like a textbook and it gives a detailed history of Middle Earth. J. R. R. Tolkien actually never finished the Silmarillion, he died before he got the chance to finish it, but his son edited what Tolkien had and from there he pieced the Silmarillion into what it is today. | |||||||||
| My Opinions: I'm not gonna lie to you. I have never read this book. I plan on it, but I haven't got there yet. Once I do, should this site still be here (hopefully it won't take me that long to read), I'll tell you what I thought. | |||||||||
| The Hobbit: | |||||||||
| The Hobbit is Tolkien's children's classic about a little hobbit named Bilbo Baggins who is duped into going on an adventure (a thing no respectable hobbit would ever do) to reclaim the gold and kingdom of the dwarf Thorin Oakenshield, which has been stolen by the dragon Smaug. Traveling with Bilbo is none other than exiled King Thorin Oakenshield, Gandalf the Grey (a wizard whom LotR fans might remember) and 12 other dwarfs (Dori, Nori, Ori, Gloin, Oin, Fili, Kili, Bombur, Bofur, Bifur, Balin and Dwalin just in case you were wondering). As the journey to win back the Lonely Mountain continues we meet several other memorable characters, some of whom come back into other Tolkien stories: Elrond, Beorn, Bard, Gwaiihir (king of the eagles), Gollum, etc. Many events occur that slowly change Bilbo from a scared, bumbling hobbit into the brave, stealth burglar that Gandalf had been promising the dwarfs from the very beginning. | |||||||||
| My Opinions: I love Bilbo Baggins! He is by far my favorite character out of all the ones Tolkien created. Of course this means that I love the Hobbit, but I have reasons besides just that, too. For instance, the riddle contest, Bilbo has with Gollum. What has it got in its pocketses? It was brilliant! Speaking of Gollum, of course I must mention the fact that we get to witness Bilbo's discovery of the One Ring, even if no one knows that he's actually carrying the essence of evil in his "pocketses." One thing I wish would have happened a little better in this story, though, is the development of the other characters besides Bilbo. We don't even get to know Gandalf that well and I think that's kind of a shame. Other than that, an absolutely brilliant story. My favorite part is the spiders of Mirkwood. Go Bilbo! |
