Dead of Winter
Stout Competition
The 1st Annual "Dead of Winter" Stout Competition will be held on January 17th, 2009 in Kingsford, Michigan at the home of Dr. Scott McGuire, N3375 Four Seasons Drive. Email for directions.
This contest is open to members of the Tri-County Fermenters, Bay de Noc Brewers, and Green Bay Rackers, as well as anyone else interested in entering.  This concept behind this contest is to make a creative Stout that best fits the theme of the contest.  Entries will be judged at a group of Stout enthusiasts.  This will NOT be a BJCP sanctioned competition and will NOT be judged by BJCP judges.  Basically this is your chance to to throw caution to the wind and make a really interesting stout.  So while you should follow basic stout guidelines, such as use of roasted barley and creating a beer dark brown to black in color, the rest is completely open to your own intrepretation of the style, including what you do to make your beer stand out.
Here are the basic rules:
You will need to submit 8 beers for this contest.  I know that may sound like a a lot, but two will be for judging, and the other six will be for a beer exchange.  So each brewer will get a six pack of entered beers.
You will also place your email address in the bottle, so that you can provide feedbeck for each beer you receive.  You will only be allowed to enter one beer, so make it a good one.  One thing to note is that the competition organizer, Edward Mathis, will NOT send contestants their six pack via private carrier so you will either need to A) be present, or B) arrange for pickup with me.  Entry fee will be $5.  Wiinners will be asked to provide their recipe for posting on this site.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the competition organizer.
If you cannot attend the event, send your entries to:

You can also drop off entries at
Dickinson County Hospital Rehabilitation Services in Iron Mountain, MI
Ben Harris, Bay de Noc Brewers Vice-President in Escanaba, MI (Please do not reveal what you are entering as Ben will be judging.)
The contest organizer will be in Green Bay on Jan 13th for a 7pm meeting at Titletown Brewing Co.  He will accept entries at that time.
Award ribbons will be given to the top three beers.
