Maurie

On Monday at 4:30 on August 21, 2000 (Pacific Time), Maurie was helped across Rainbow Bridge. I came home early from work to spend extra time with Maurie and it was pretty obvious that his time was very close. In addition to his heart condition and FIV, Maurie was in renal failure. Maurie was close to 17 years old.

We went out into the backyard for a short while - he could only take a couple of uneasy steps, but we sat out there and watched the jays for fifteen minutes. When we came back in and I brushed him, something he enjoyed, but he was too weak to even knead.
He only complained once when I was carrying to the car in his carrier. On the way to the vet, Maurie was very quiet.
I stayed with my little hero until the end - I heard his spirit take flight. I could see him watching the birds and playing in the sun - whole once again. I am certain he will be back soon. My heart is broken and doesn't feel like it will ever mend. I will miss Maurie greatly.

Maurie was the gentlest creature I have ever met. He was adopted by me from ALLCATS (All Creatures are Truly Special), which is located in Dahlonega, GA. I was looking for kitten, but fell in love with Maurie! He was somewhere between four and six years old when I adopted him and he lived with me for almost ten years.

When Maurie was found, he was living outside at an apartment complex. An older woman was feeding his companion and him, but the woman couldn't afford to take care of them, so she called ALLCATS. ALLCATS took Maurie to a veterinarian for shots and the vet found that he had pellet in his left flank. And he had a pretty bad case of fleas, which was not good since Maurie was allergic to fleas.

Maurie was our little zen master. He mastered mediatation and taught us all unconditional love. He cared for each and every cat that ever came into our house. I miss him sitting on my lap and reaching with his paw for my hand to let me know it was time to pet him. But the sorrow will pass and the joy of knowing such a truly wonderful creature will remain.
