Try this reading strategy to help you understand materials...
Start at LEVEL ONE... the "who", "what", "where", "when" questioning of what you are reading.  These are questions that you can point to the answer in the material that you are reading.

For example, in "The Three Little Pigs"... How many little pigs were there?  What kind of animals were they?  Who huffs and puffs?  What did the first little pig use to build his house?

Once you're comfortable with answering the LEVEL ONE questions, you're ready to go on to...

LEVEL TWO!!!  The questions that make you think a little to answer them.

For example, in "Goldilocks and the Three Bears"... Why did Goldilocks try all three beds?  Why didn't Goldilocks eat all three bowls of porridge?  How did Goldilocks end up in the bears' house?

Once you're comfortable with answering the LEVEL TWO questions, you're ready to go on to...

LEVEL THREE!!!  The questions that help relate the story to you.

For example, in "Hansel and Gretel"... What would you have done if you had encountered the house in the forest?  Have you ever felt as adventurous as Hansel and Gretel?  Why or why not?  Why are people greedy?

CONGRATULATIONS!  You've mastered all three levels.  Hopefully, this type of questioning while you read your materials will help you have a better understanding of it!
