Odeon 1973
José Live at the Birmingham Odeon March 10th 1973
By Alan Wilson

Its now 30 years ago, March 10th 1973, when I saw Jose, for the first time, live, on stage, at the Odeon, in Birmingham, here in England. Id been a fan since 1967, when Id seen him on TV, during his first visit to the UK, but that Saturday night, with Jose performing with the London Symphony Orchestra, was so special. Id only found out a couple of weeks before the concert, that it was taking place, so I was very lucky to get two tickets, at such a late stage. The seats werent together, they were one behind the other, and my wife was seven months pregnant at the time, with what was to be our first daughter! When Jose appeared on stage, he looked so small, as we were quite a way back, up in the circle. He opened with "(I cant get no) Satisfaction", but Im pretty sure the whole audience did, for the whole of the evening. There was familiar stuff and favourites, like Windmills of your Mind, Rain, California Dreamin, Destiny, and, of course, Light my Fire, but there were also numbers that Ive never heard since, such as pieces from Shaft and Jesus Christ Superstar, which were where the Orchestra particularly excelled. The whole evening was a tremendous experience, and the start of what has developed into me being so lucky to have been able to enjoy so many special performances over the last thirty years, and hopefully for more in the future. As I think Ive said before, Jose continues to bring something special to each live performance, and this was where it started for me.
