As a Feliciano fan I had a guilty secret! I did not want to go to Jazz Cafe. I'm middle aged and "clubbing" is not something I do! AND everyone warned me that Jazz Cafe was no place for a wheel chair user. In 2002 José came to Jazz Cafe and, when I realised there would be no other venues, I bought tickets.

2002 was not a good year for me I had a car accident in March which resulted in my car being written off and huge financial outlay.......in the midst of this I had one thing to look foreward to......José coming to London; except in May the June performances were cancelled. Amidst the horror of that announcement I was sure of one thing, José would not let us down without good reason soooooo I encouraged people to keep faith and to rebook.

Fast foreward to a WET Monday in October and I was on a train going to London, arrived at Jazz Cafe when they opened as per their instructions to wheel chair users and within about three seconds I felt at home in the place. The immediate joy of Jazz Cafe is the atmosphere. In a theatre you go in, find a seat and sit in it you don't have the opportunity to talk to people (except the vaguest pleasantaries). By being a club Jazz Cafe encourages mingling and conversation with old and new friends.

By about 8.00 it was apparant that one of my dreads could come true, that as the place filled up I would be pushed back by the crowd and be unable to see anything, so, I rammed myself up against the stage right in front of José's stool and there I stayed, still talking.

José came on at about 9.30 and played for about ninety minutes. I've added the set lists for all six performances to the end of this page for people interested in detail. To me José was the event not each individual song. He IS SPECIAL however we may struggle to describe the attraction we feel for him. For the two nights I was at Jazz Cafe he was in brillant form. I often say that José's music have been part of my life for most of my life and for me this was a trip down memory lane, each of the old songs reminding me of events iin my own life, so I cried and I smiled and I laughed. One of Joseé's new songs is called "She's in My Blood", I joked with a new friend that José is in OUR blood!

The down side of Jazz Cafe for me was that José's dressing room was up a flight of stairs, I could not get to see him but after the show I waited and eventually he came down those stairs, we talked for what seemed a long time, afterwards I had no clear memories of the conversation but, as it does come back to me I am shocked by the range of things we talked about......so my memories of Jazz Cafe are not just of the wonder of the music but of the specialness of the guy making it who was prepared to stop to talk to me late at night when he must have been tired. At the end of the second show I saw I made a "date" with a new friend to meet in front of the stool "next time". I am sure there will be a next time and I'll be there where ever it is!
