GUITARRA MIA - THE VIDEO

BY ALAN WISON

Firstly I must point out that I do not speak Spanish, so this is my impression from an English perspective.

This video was compiled and released as a tribute to José Feliciano by Banco Popular of Puerto Rico at the end of 2000, and the result is a marvellous achievement to combine an historical, pictorial, musical and conversational documentary of José and his friends and family.

Many Latin artists either join José in song or offer their own interpretation of some of his most popular and notable songs. Stand out moments for me include the opening duet with Marc Anthony singing and playing "Oye Guitarra Mia". This was already a favourite of mine from José’s 1996 album "Americano" and here it is given another superb outing.

There’s also José’s duet with Lucecita Benitez on "Para Decir Adios", originally from "Love Scenes", which I find captivating.

Throughout the whole ninety-minute programme José offers commentary and conversation with Banco Popular executive president Richard Carrion. He documents the development of his career and there’s a superb montage of TV clips from possibly his first appearance through the "Star Spangled Banner" episode, "Chico and the Man" and many guest appearances on Variety Shows.

Amongst all this there’s a very cleverly edited version of "Light My Fire" where old footage is mixed with new to give a unique rendition.

The other star in this tribute is José’s mother, Hortencia, who sadly passed away in October 2000. Although I don’t know what she said, I could tell how proud she was of her famous son, and her enthusiasm and feeling came over so vibrantly on the film.

Even if another version was released with English subtitles, although it may give me a better understanding of the video, it’s already a perfectly finished article, and one I have no hesitation in recommending.
