HOW MY FATHER BECAME A FELICIANO FAN - BY VICKI MANTELERO

I have been a fan of José's since around 1974 or so.  José had written and performed the theme song for the show, "Chico & The Man" Since the chicano craze was on here in the area, and Freddie Prinz was "LOOKING GOOOOOD" we were all into the sitcom.  But José had a walk on part in one episode, and from that moment, and that song, I had to get my hands on everything José had ever done.

I had an old stereo, the kind that burned alot of electricity because it used hot radio tubes, but you could stack the records on it, and it would play through the night.   My father was always onto me about letting it go all night.

I never really knew if it was the excess electricity I was using, or that Dad really didn't like the music.  (How many parents actually LIKE what their kids listen to?)

My dad was also a guitarist.  Mostly Chicago blues.  I had recently purchased the Sweet Soul Music album and over the days had played it until I almost wore it out.

One morning I came into the living room and my dad was playing something, and it took me a few minutes to realize he was playing Sweet Soul Music.  When I asked him about it, he replied that if I insisted on playing those albums all night long and he couldn't hear anything else.

He finally admitted that he really liked the stuff after actually listening to it.  Dad was a fan until his death in 1984.  So now when I listen to my albums, I think about my Dad and it always brings a smile to my face.

Thanks for everything José!!
