JOSÉ
BY HEIDI GAINAN- LARSEN

I have been a Feliciano fan since I was twelve.   Most of my age group at the time was hot after Bobby Sherman and Paul Revere and the Raiders, but I was the lone José fan in the seventh grade.   I punctuated all my correspondence, including school papers, with a small drawing of sunglasses and a sweep of black hair, signifying José.

I owned many of his albums and visited the ones I did not yet own at the Broadway Record Store in downtown Billings after school.  I can still remember the smell of the store and the excitement of seeing new, unheard, José albums still wrapped in cellophane.

Through the years, our relationship went through ups and downs...I tried other artists, he sang to other fans...but I always came back, to "Feliciano 10-23", "Fireworks" and "Alive-Alive-O".  We both grew up, he unaware of the lasting influence he had on my life. My thoughts turned to college and career, and still José was there...influencing me through "Compartments", "Memphis Menu", "And the Feelings Good"...ah, great stuff!

Perhaps because of our relationship, I turned to a career in the blind rehabilitation field...coincidence?  I don't believe in them; they are "God incidences" to me...so, yes, I'm sure God was working through José to channel me into this work.

Now, that we are both adults.  Some things have not changed...he is still a fabulous artist, I am still an ardent fan.  His CD's, have replaced my LPs, and accompany me throughout my travel days.  His "Senor Bolero" provides the background music to my life at home.

He is older, I am older, but the music is still there..the soul is vibrant and alive...Alive-Alive-O! Thanks, José.
