For once, Nick was being proactive. He picked up on Abes fear of them being found out. He realized she needed to be clued in on AJ and Marcus knowing. It would be a disaster for her to find out by accident. However, just because he was being proactive didnt mean he was completely insane. Nope, he was a chicken and making AJ tell her.
AJ looked so serious, which was unusual enough, but coupled with the fact they were in the back of a cab made Abe want to laugh. They, along with Marcus, were on their way back to the hotel after doing some shopping. AJ had been fidgety as a cat a room full of rockers, while they were shopping and his bodyguard hadnt been much better. Now, Marcus sat up front talking to the driver, allowing Abe and AJ some privacy.
AJ took both her hands and gazed intently at her. Abe gave him an uneasy look.
Is someone dying, she asked in all seriousness.
No!
Pulling her hands free, Abe said, then quit acting like this. Youre freakin me out man!
You're not gonna like this, but I gotta tell ya anyway. I know about you and Nick, AJ confessed, in a rush of words. He watched her eyes widen, her face pale. He didnt think she was breathing. Abe say something.
Stop the car.
This caught the drivers attention. He glanced at Marcus, who dismissed the request with a shake of his head, before continuing their conversation. He wasnt about to be pulled into this.
Abe, it aint no big thing.
Her face suddenly shot red. Through clenched teeth, she hissed, it is a huge thing. Did Nick tell you?
Hell no! Pat, Marcus and me figured it out when we went dancing.
Im going to be sick, she muttered.
Abe this is a good thing.
No, its an over thing.
Ah hell! No it isnt, replied AJ. You are the best thing that ever happened to that boy and hes been good for you too. Im not about to let you fuck this up!
Abe stared at him for a minute then she started to cry. Well damn if that didnt surprise him.
Abe dont cry. This is not a bad thing. We think its pretty fucking fantastic.
You do, she asked in small voice.
Yeah.
Rogers gonna fire me, AJ.
No hes not. We made a pact that we wouldnt say anything to anyone.
Yeah you kept that pact, retorted Abe.
Hey Nicky and you are the only two who know we know. He looked confused for a moment. I think I got that straight.
Smiling, she said, You did. So Nick knows you know?
Yeah. Hes the reason Im telling you now. She cocked an eyebrow and he continued, Hes been payin attention to you freak about others finding out. He figured you needed to know we know. Chicken Shit made me tell you.
He did?
Yeah, said AJ, rolling his eyes.
Why?
He wanted me to take the brunt of your freak out.
Oh, replied Abe, frowning.
Now dont get that face, he ordered.
Hes myboyfriend and he doesnt want to be around me when I freak. Got it.
Will you cut this shit out? He was scared.
Yeah of me freaking out!
No of losing you.
Because I freaked?
Sort ofThe first thing you said was its over. Thats not a confidence builder.
Looking dejected, Abe said, I guess so.
Cheer up. This is all good. Are you going to give him a hard time?
We will have to talk.
Shit! The weve gotta talk thing. Why do you girls all gotta do that?
Making a face at him, she said, Its not like that AJ. I need to let him know why I freak around him.
Cause your scared, replied AJ, smugly.
Actually, its the opposite.
Huh?
I feel safe enough with himand you, she said, poking him. To freak out around you.
AhhhI get it. So we cool?
Were cool, replied Abe.
*******
Nick was pacing the suite, when Abe stepped inside.
Weve got to talk.
Shit!
Despite her best intentions, Abe started laughing. Will you just sit down.
Shit, he muttered, taking a seat on the couch. I can fix this
He was silenced by a kiss.
Quiet. I get to talk now.
He nodded and remained silent.
Im not mad. Im a little hurt. WaitOnly, because you were afraid to be around when I freaked out. Im sorry Ive freaked out so much lately.
I know its newthis is me shutting up now.
Thank you. Its more than that Nick. Ive only ever freaked with Michele. Freaking is a sign of weakness and gives power to others, so I dont normally let people see that side of me. I trust you and AJ, because both of you have seen me cry and youve handled it. However, if you dont want to deal with it, then Ill figure out a way to keep it in check.
NoI was a chicken shit. Why are you smiling?
AJ used that same phrase.
Shithead, mutter Nick, but he was smiling. I was afraid youd break up with me and I figured hed have a better chance of talking you out of it.
In other words, we both freaked.
Yeah I guess we did. Sorry.
Caressing his face, Abe said, Make a deal with you.
Okay?
Only one of us gets to freak out at a time. Up until now it has worked for us.
Yeah. Except for at your apartment and now.
True. Laughing, she said, good thing we had Michele and AJ to get us back in line.
Yeah. I cant believe he called me a chicken shit.
Was he wrong?
No, but thats so not the point.
I know baby.
Nick immediately shifted gears upon hearing the endearment. Pulling her close, he kissed her.
Let me guessBaby, she said.
He grinned and said, oh yeah.
Abe allowed him to distract her for only a few minutes.
Pulling away from his lips, she said, Okay, time to be serious.
Now, he whined. Okay.
If there is something we need to talk about, you need to trust me enough to come to me. I may freak some, but eventually I calm down. The only times weve had problems in the whole time weve known each other were when we didnt talk things through.
I know. So from now on we talk.
Yes. Just because I freak, doesnt mean I dont love you. I do. I love you even more, because youre there for me.
Bella, Ill always try to be there. And youre right, it is better to go through things with you.
Baby, I feel the same way, she said with a grin.
Theres that word again.
Bab
Talking done.
