| In Spring 2003, I took an interdisciplinary course at Baruch College called Feit Seminar Changing the World taught by professor and journalist Alisa Solomon and a myriad of guest professors. One guest professor came to speak to us about the Universal Basic Income. The UBI is a policy that would provide all citizens with a basic income. The arguments backing such a policy really appealed to me, but then there were those arguments against it... The critics felt that it was not politically feasible, and that it took the focus away from policies that were. Although America might not be ready for such a radical policy as the UBI, I thought about universal healthcare. I had to find out why the US doesnt already have such coverage. After all, most developed countries have it, such as Canada or France. Some of my relatives from France actually had a very hard time believing that the US government didnt provide its citizens with universal healthcare coverage. In such a rich country as the United States many people find that its a little bit shocking. Here are a few questions that I wanted to answer: Why is universal healthcare being resisted so much? Why does it feel that people are being manipulated? Who put in peoples mind that the free market can solve healthcare problems when theres proof that its otherwise? My essay should provide you (the reader) valuable information on these topics, and after reading it, I hope that you too will support Universal Health Care. If you are looking for some quick facts on the American healthcare system, check out the Q&A section. |
