Legolas Greenleaf, whose first name means Greenleaf (lego-green, las-leaf) in Sindarin, is the most famous Elf from The Lord of the Rings, and is one of my favorite and most loved Elves. He is Prince of the northern woodland realm of Mirkwood, and is a Sindarin Wood-Elf. He was born in the Third Age. His sire is King Thranduil. His mother is not known, and he has no known siblings. He was sent by his sire as a delegate to Imladris (Rivendell) and was present at The Council of Elrond. He pledged his bow and services to Frodo Baggins, thus joining the Fellowship of the Ring on the Quest and is one of the famed Nine Walkers appointed by Lord Elrond. He befriended Gimli the Dwarf during the Quest, and their friendship lasted even after War ended. Legolas dresses in green and brown, and is armed with a bow and several knives. He is fair of face, tall, and is quick of hearing and keen-eyed, being an Elf. After the War, he led some of his sire's people from the southern portion of Mirkwood (which was renamed Eryn Lasgalen, the Wood of Greenleaves) to dwell in Ithilien. Under their care, Ithilien was made into the fairest of the lands of the Men. There he remained until the day King Elessar passed away, when he took ship with the Dwarf Gimli son of Glin and sailed West to Eressa, Elvenhome. |
