Crdan
Another little-known Elf from J.R.R. Tolkien's works is Crdan the Shipwright. He is a Telerin Elf, lord of the Falas, which are the coasts of West Beleriand. In the last chapter of Return of the King, Tolkien describes him as being very tall, "and his beard was long, and he was grey and old, save that his eyes were keen as stars". Crdan is the only Elf to have a beard. With Gil-galad he escaped to the Isle of Balar after the destruction of the Havens. He was the keeper of the Grey Havens in the Gulf of Lhn during the Second and Third Ages. Originally, he was the bearer of the Elven Ring Narya, the Ring of Fire, but when Gandalf the Istari came over the Sea from the West, Crdan entrusted it to him. He was present at the Last Alliance, and unsuccessfully attempted with Elrond to persuade Isildur to cast the One Ring into the fires of Mordor. He also sent a messenger named Galdor with an errand to Elrond's Council. When the Ring-bearers sailed into the West at the end of the Third Age, Crdan went with them.
