| Her name is Arwen Undmiel, which means Evenstar. Arwen is a peredhel, or half-elf. She is the daughter of Lord Elrond and Celebran, and is the younger sister of the twins Elladan and Elrohir, and was born in the year 241 of the Third Age. Because of her extreme beauty, she was said to be the very likeness of Lthien on Middle-Earth. She spent most of her time in Lothlrien with her grandparents, Lord Celeborn and Lady Galadriel. In the year 2951 of the Third Age, she met Aragorn in Imladris when she came to visit her sire. They met again, in the year 2980, in Lothlrien, and decided to become wedded. Her sire informed her that she would continue to enjoy the life of immortals until he set sail to Valinor, then she would be free to chose whether she wanted to be a mortal or remain immortal, and sail West with him. Lord Elrond also informed Aragorn that he would not wed Arwen unless he was King of both Gondor and Arnor. Arwen's love kept Aragorn going. She fashioned the standard that was flown on the Corsair ship that Aragorn commanded in the War of the Ring and wrought the stars on the banner out of gems. Arwen finally wedded Aragorn in the year 3019 of the Third Age on Midsummer's Day in the Citadel of Minas Tirith, the White City. She chose to become mortal, being a half-elf, when she wedded Aragorn. Her passage West to Valinor she gave to the hobbit Frodo Baggins. She gave birth to a son, Eldarion, and several daughters. When Aragorn passed away, she went to Lothlrien, where she laid herself to die upon Cerin Amroth. Her grave still remains there, until the shape of the world is changed. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In the books, Arwen was described as "...a lady fair to look upon, and so like was she in form of womanhood to Elrond that Frodo guessed that she was one of his close kindred. Young was she and yet not so. The braids of her dark hair were touched by no frost; her white arms and clear face were flawless and smooth, and the light of stars was in her bright eyes, grey as a cloudless night; yet queenly she looked, and thought and knowledge were in her glance, as of one who has known many things that the years bring. Above her brow her head was covered with a cap of silver lace netted with small gems, glittering white; but her soft grey raiment had no ornament save a girdle of leaves wrought in silver." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In the movies, Arwen was given a much larger role. She took the place of Glorfindel and rode on Asfaloth and saved Frodo. In the second movie it is implied that she leaves for the West with the rest of her kin, and in the third movie she comes back and confronts him after seeing a vision of her son. None of this is what Arwen in the books did, where she had very minute roles, and was not mentioned very often. |
