Working the earth day after day
mixing soil and water
with dedication, no time for play
not much time for her.
His love was strong she would concur
but little romance
and
why was it the garden he'd prefer?
What was it with that man?
Year upon year would end as it began
but her love for him was
great
and the garden she'd not ban.
Just one of his flaws.
It wasn't until she lay near death
that she had the courage
to ask him why
with her last breath;
free fears from their cage.
He looked upon her not with rage
but tenderness.
Breathing deep he looked each year his age
and then professed:
"Oh my darling didn't you see, didn't you guess?
My heart is there
given to you with words I could never express.
Love laid bare.
Put in each bush and flower planted with care."
With tears he whispered,
"I just never knew you were unaware..."
But that she never heard.
In their garden he spread her ashes
with eyes
blurred.
"I love you" floated her voice
on the wind with the wings of a bird
feathers colored red.
You can find him to this day bent over the flowerbed
working the earth each day
making sure the love in their garden stays fed.
He has no time for play.
