| CHAPTER 99
I wake up and a sharp pain soars through my body. I gasp for breath and squeeze the sheets in my hands. I hear Dunk waking up and he turns on the light. "What's wrong babe?" he asks, wide awake at once. "I don't know, I had this... cramp!" I say, fighting back the tears. "Oh God, no! I'm having contractions!" I whisper shocked. I quickly push away the sheets. I give a little sigh of relief when I see that there's no blood or other fluids in the bed. We stare at eachother in disbelief. "It can't... it's too early!" Dunk shakes his head. I feel another contraction and squeeze Dunk's hand. "I'm taking you to the hospital!" he calls out and puts on his clothes as fast as he can. He helps me to get dressed and lifts me up. I tightly wrap my arms around him when he carries me to the car. Twenty minutes later I'm lying in a hospital bed with a nurse and Duncan standing next to me. A doctor comes rushing in. "It can't doctor, it can't! She's only at 23 weeks!" Dunk calls out desperate. "Calm down, sir. Please!" the doctor turns at him after throwing a quick look at me. "Are you the father of the baby?" Dunk nods. "Okay, than you can stay here if you calm down," the doctor says to him and turns at me. I feel surprisingly calm when he starts to ask me questions. "At how many weeks are you?" "23." He looks up from his paper surprised. "It's twins," I explain. He nods and goes on questioning me. "And who's your gynecologist?" he asks me at last. "She's in the Netherlands," Dunk calls out, for the zillionth time interrupting. "I live in the Netherlands, so I have a Dutch gynecologist," I answer the doctor, who ignores Dunk. "Okay, we're gonna try to stop the contractions," he smiles at me and than turns to the nurse. "Get her a line. And monitor the babies." I get a line in my arm with medicines to stop the contractions, and a band over my belly to check the babies' heartbeats. "Dunk, come on this side of the bed, you're in their way," I smile at him and reach out my hand. He goes to the other side and grabs my hand tightly. "Hey, I should be the one to squeeze your hand," I smile at him. He gives me a nervous smile. "It will be okay. Sit down," I point at the chair next to him. They take some blood from me and the doctor and nurse leave. "Try to relax. I'll be back when I've got the results," the doctor holds up the tube with blood. When the door closes we stay silent for a while. "Isn't that heart rate too high?" he whispers hardly audible, staring at the monitor with the babies' heartbeats. "It's high, yes. But I bet yours is too," I smile, putting my hand on his chest. He nods, giving me a faint smile. "I'm glad you're here with me," I say, giving a kiss on his hand. "I'm never gonna leave you!" he stands up and bends over me. "I love you Duncan James," I whisper and he lowers his head for a long, sweet kiss. We quickly look up when we hear someone cough. It's the doctor. "Had any contractions?" he asks me. "Just a few, and they seem to be getting weaker," I answer. "Good, good. You seem quite relaxed, and the heart rates are getting back to normal," he smiles and points at the monitor. I smile at Dunk encouraging, he's all nervous again. "I got the results of the blood tests, they're all negative. We couldn't find anything that caused the contractions," the doctor gives us a searching look. "So I have a question. It might seem odd, but I need to know," he takes a short break. I wonder what he's gonna ask. "Did you have sex recently?" "Yes!" Dunk answers, squeezing my hand. "Several times," I grin. "How long ago?" the doctor asks, writing things down. "I don't know!" Dunk calls out. "I don't even know what time it is!" "5 am," the doctor says, checking his watch. "Than we weren't long asleep when I got the first contractions. It's just a few hours ago," I answer. "We just got back together yesterday," I grin sheepishly at the doctor. "Well that explains a lot!" the doctor looks up at me. "What? How?" Dunk calls out. "Having several orgasms in a short time can cause the contractions to start." "What? Why didn't we know that?" Dunk yells. "It rarely ever happens, that's why it isn't told," the doctor shrugs. "But if the contractions stop within an hour from now, no harm has been done. Just make sure it won't happen again," the doctor winks at me. "We can't...?" Dunk calls out. "Yes, you can. Once a day at the most," the doctor answers serious, but I can see the corner of his mouth twitching. "I'll come back in an hour," he walks towards the door. "Doctor?" I say. He turns around. "Can I eat or drink anything now?" I ask. "No food yet, but you can have a drink, as long as it isn't coffee," he nods and leaves. "It's all my fault that you're in hospital now!" Dunk calls out. "What if something happens to you? Or the babies? I would never forgive myself! It's all my fault!" "Dunk, it isn't. I didn't know either that this could happen," I say softly. "I should have known! I should have read more about pregnancy!" he says, looking angry. "If I didn't know, than how were you supposed to know? I doubt it's in the books!" I try to calm him down. "I should have been more careful. I should have stopped. It was too tiring for you anyway!" "Hey! I was there too, you know! I didn't want you to stop! We were together," I take his hand and stroke it. He pulls his hand away and starts to walk around frustrated. "Can you give me the phone? I wanna call the guys and Patty." The expression on his face softens when he looks at me and he hands me the phone. "And can you get me some tea?" "Sure babe," he smiles and gives me a kiss. With big steps he leaves the room. |
