CHAPTER 68

"Iris," Dunk says. I look at him.
"I owe you an apology," he says. I keep looking straight at him.
"I'm really really sorry for what I said. I don't even know why I said it, but it was really stupid of me," he says. I take a deep breath and look away from him.
"Won't you accept my apologies?" he asks me. He goes back to cutting the lettuce. "It's also hard for me, you know! Seeing you fall in love with my best friend And than you got pregnant, got upset and left us all for more than a month Ho do you think that made me feel? And than you found out that it's my baby Of course Lee wasn't happy about it, but you seemed upset about it too! I'm genuinely happy about it, but you make me feel like it's wrong to be happy!" he keeps on cutting the lettuce, angry.
"Dunk, please stop cutting," I quietly say.
Too late!
"OUCH!" Dunk yells out. He has cut himself with the sharp knife. He quickly puts down the knife and goes to the sink. His hand starts to bleed terrible.
"Tia!" I call as loud as I can and take a towel for Dunk's hand. Everybody comes rushing in.
"Don't look if you can't handle blood," I call at them. Ant and Sy immediately turn away. Dunk's hand is covered in blood, and it's streaming into the sink.
"Oh God!" Lee whispers shocked. I carefully put the towel around Dunk's hand, to see if I can stop the bleeding. It doesn't stop, but I can see where the cut is. Two fingers, his thumb and a part through his hand!
"Wow, this is bad," Tia says shocked. Dunk's face is really pale.
"Get him a chair!" I call out. I hope he isn't gonna faint! He quickly sits down.
"Do you have another towel?" I ask Lee, because this one is already drenched. I put the new towel around his hand really tight.
"Ouch," Dunk moans.
"I'm sorry, but the bleeding has to stop," I softly say.
"It looks worse than it is," I say to the others, who shortly glance at Dunk once and a while. "But you need stitches," I say to Dunk. He looks back at me and nods.
"I think you know the best way to get to the hospital?" I ask Tia.
"Yeah, I'll get my car," she nods and rushes out of the kitchen.
"I'll go with you," I say to Dunk. He gives me a thankful smile. He's still looking awfully pale though!
"Don't worry, he didn't cut off his finger or something," I smile at the others. "You can stay here, we don't need any fainting guys," I try to make them smile. Lee gets us our coats.
"Can you finish making dinner? We'll be starving by the time we're back," I turn around at the door. All 3 of them nod. I take Dunk's arm and we get into Tia's car.

At the hospital

Tia and I are in the waiting room, they're stitching Dunk up right now.
"How did it happen?" Tia asks me.
"He was angry, and he was cutting the lettuce," I answer.
"Angry?"
"Yeah. He apologized to me, but I didn't say anything," I sigh. "I feel guilty."
"Iris! It's not your fault! I shouldn't have left you two alone, and Dunk shouldn't have gone on cutting when we was angry and not paying attention. It's nobody's fault," she says urgently.
"You're right," I nod, looking at the floor. She pokes my arm with her elbow and I look up. Dunk and a nurse are coming towards us. His left hand is heavily bandaged.
"Wow, seems like you won't be making diner for a while," Tia calls out.
"Are you okay? Does it hurt much?" I ask worried.
"I'm fine. At the moment I don't feel my hand at all," he gives me a weak smile.
"He'll be fine," the nurse smiles at us. "If you'll fill out this form, you can go home," she turns to Dunk.
He nods: "Thanks."
"You got painkillers at home? Otherwise step by at the pharmacy here, because the shops are closed by now," the nurse says.
"I'm a pharmacist, I'll give him some," I smile.
"I'll get the car," Tia says and leaves us. The nurse leaves us too after Dunk has filled out the form. He turns at me and wants to say something.
"I accept your apologies Dunk. And I'm really sorry," I say looking in his eyes.
"I'm glad about that. But you don't have to be sorry about anything. I'm sorry. Sorry about all the stupid things I did to you," he says looking back at me.
"It's okay. I'm glad everything's gonna be fine," I smile, looking at this bandaged hand.
"Everything's gonna be okay, Iris. Everything," he says meaningful, lifting up my face. I give him a tight hug, he kisses me on my hair.
We go to Tia, who takes us back home. After dinner Dunk's already making jokes again. The air has cleared up totally, we're all friends again. Later that evening I go back home with Lee, after dropping off Dunk at his place.
