| After playing acoustically for the Session in Wales last week, Grant, Taka and new drummer Mark came in to talk to Bethan about the new album 'Comfort in Sound'. | ||||||||||||||
| 'Comfort in Sound' is the title track and starts the album. You've obviously chosen it as a representative of a body of work. Do you feel that it covers everything that you have written about? Grant - 'No I wouldn't say every thing. It was a great line which came very early in the writing process. It was just so true really because I got back into writing, that was my way of dealing with John's death. So I just felt that that was a very appropriate lyric and album title as well. I think it's a typical Feeder sounding track in some way but I think it's also a very positive song as well, quite uplifting. Which I think is important. There's obviously songs on the album that do go a lot darker than that one.' Were you quite apprehensive about the fact that people are going to be reading so much into the lyrics and what they mean? Yeah, terrified. But then there were certain songs that I didn't know if I was being maybe too honest. But that's what I needed to say and I didn't really plan it. The great thing about this album and all these songs is that they came quite naturally there was no big plan. It wasn't even making a Feeder record, it's just a bunch of songs, lyrics and feelings that went into making this and its ended up being our 4th album. I think it will be a comfort to a lot of fans as well. They do feel that they know Jon, and when you read some of the lyrics they're very expressive of a loss. The lyric in 'Quick To Fade': 'I miss you more than words can say', it must be very difficult for you to face the touring next year and thinking of singing these lyrics for a long time? Yeah. I did actually find that one quite hard to sing. I had to bite my lip a few times when we played that one at the festivals, but I really wanted to play that one I thought it was an important song to play. The thing is with these songs, there is a lot of sadness in there but I think for someone who doesn't know anything about Feeder the songs are quite open for interpretation. Bethan's favourite - 'Godzilla' Personally I just reacted to the energy in this one. Yeah, Well that's really why it made the album. It's a song that we jammed with Jon, I had a riff. It was going to be instrumental but after going back to the song and reworking it and stuff I just wanted it to be a few simple lines. If you listen to the lyrics on that song, they are heavy. The thing is that song needed to be on the album for us. IT had the energy, it's a really fun song to play in the rehearsal room, it's just so full on. I think it shows the frustration and the anger that we all felt after what happened. Although there's a huge emptiness and sadness that you feel, there are some days that you just feel angry. That song is that side. IT's a positive anger. The anger comes in the music rather than the vocals. Taka, is there a bit of a Japanese influence going on there then? Taka - Well it's funny because we've just come back from Japan where each interview they always mentioned Godzilla. Technically with the album do you feel you've taken it a step further using Gill Norton again? Continuity important for you as a band then? Actually we weren't going to use Gill, not because we didn't like working with him. Obviously me and him had a few run ins on the last one. There was just something inside that said I could work with him. He came down to hear the demos and he said that he felt that there was something special there. So we didn't want to dilute that in anyway, so he did a co-production with us. He doesn't normally do that. How did you come on board with Mark? Mark - I got a phone call after I heard the news it was a few months after that. I got a phone call and they asked me if I would be interested in it. I've known them for 10 years. Is that generally from the touring circuit? Yeah, we toured together a few times. They've always been Feeder, I've been in different bands. It was nice to get the call. You're off touring this album next year. Are you looking forward to going back out there and facing everybody and doing the press and publicity, because that's what's always stuck me about Feeder - you work so hard! I think we're being a bit more selective this time, not because we're trying to do the rock star thing, but I don't feel comfortable doing some of the things that we've done before. That was important to do then, but I think that you have to move on. I'm feeling really confident about touring and I'm really looking forward to it. |
