The Pukey films are disputable classics. They are historical and fun to watch... that is, if you were in them. To the modern eye, it is shoddy filmmaking with a loose plot and a lot of offensive jokes that aren't all that funny. To the eye of the McNeely veteran, it is priceless nostalgia.
THE BITS: 1. SHORT DOCUMENTARY ON HICKS (1998) Memorable Quote: "Look at me, I'm a bush. Bushy wushy. You can't hurt me because I'm a bush." This short film features West's first on-camera independent appearance since fifth grade. So, needless to say, he was energetic. His role was a British documentary filmmaker who though that hicks were some sort of animal. He thought that if he hid behind a shrub (or "bush" as it was called), he could infiltrate the yard of the hicks and get "inside" information. This film also features Andrew Huber, in his first and only role in a QGGoat film, as a hick. Leslie steals the scene as the "Boss Hick" and is insane as usual. Why Its Funny: It was really stupid and offensive.
2. PUKEY AND FRIENDS (1998) Memorable Quote: "Pukey fell and broke his head, all of the Mexicans are now dead." Who is the elephant who pukes all over the place? It's Pukey. And maybe if you're lucky, he'll puke in your face. This was the film that started it all. In 1998, or "The Days of McNeely" to which it is commonly referred, a spark of comedic genius was created when several friends got together one afternoon after school and made a movie. They called it "Pukey and Friends." It featured a small, plastic pencil sharpener in the form of an elephant, plus a cast of several other small plastic animals. They were voiced by Leslie, G, Joey Sklover, Andrew Huber, Sam Sklover, and West. Theo Rutherford was rumored to have made an appearance with one line which was, in the typical style of Theo, not funny at all. In this film, Pukey attempts to jump off a cliff into a glass, but fails miserably and is knocked out. (NOTE: The original plan was for Pukey to make it, but we were rolling the camera and he hit the side and, oh well.) A doctor shows up along with Napoleon (I guess it was what McNeely was bitching about at the time), and craziness ensures. The only really funny scenes involve foreigners getting devoured by a hideous, giant alligator, and the final scene in which everyone was talking about the deaths of those mexicans. Why Its Funny: The crude animation is fun to watch, and the offensive stereotypes of forigners are hilarious.
3. INTRODUCTION TO QGGOAT Memorable Quote: "Jeevan Go Away films is not one of them AHAHA." In this short yet historic introduction, West explains that QGGoat has been formed. Why Its Funny: It really isn't a sketch. Its not funny. Stop laughing.
4. SMASHIN' COKE CANS Memorable Quote: "You! You screwed my DAD!" This sketch, well, the title explains it all. In the first real QGGoat sketch, we were just looking for an excuse to smash coke cans. So, we used the cover of a movie premiere (?) at the "Twin Theaters" (?) in Washington, DC (?). Anyway, the shot is from a "helicopter" hovering above these two "theatres" (the coke cans). Eventually, a guy comes out and is angry at the theatres, which suddenly become Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant (we used "Runaway Bride" as the movie, just because it was out at the time) and well, we smash em up and get it on tape. The only downside was that off camera, one of the "practice cans" made the biggest explosion I have ever seen. Why Its Funny: The ever-changing plot and the can smashing is amusing, and the outtakes are...well....different.
5. TEACHER/COP Memorable Quote: "Well how are you doing today?" "Fine" "Well that's great" (SMACK) "AUHH!" This was probably one of the weirdest sketches we have ever done. A man comes out of a house and talks about his occupation, which is a school teacher and a part time cop. He notices a young hooligan goofing off while he is walking to school, and he approaches the hooligan and attempts to engage in a "harmless" conversation, at which point he beats the hooligan senseless with his beating stick, causing him to spew blood out of his mouth. Red, thick blood, that looks almost....just almost.. like ketchup. Why Its Funny: At the end of this sketch, the camera cuts to the cop, who holds an umbrella and his beating stick. The cop does some sort of ritual dance and then points at the hooligan lying unconscious on the ground. The hooligan then spits up about 6 ounces of ketchup, er, blood with hilarious consequences.
6. MAN WALKING AWAY: AN EMOTIONAL LOOK AT THE TROUBLED EARTH, VOLUME XVII, THE WATER BOTTLE Memorable Quote: "Yes, yes, um...yes, people want to see that" This sketch is not particularly good in any way, but was created in order to test different styles of camera work. The plot revolves around a man who exits a house sadly, carrying an umbrella on a sunny day. He walks past a man urinating on the sidewalk, which disgusts him. At this point in the sketch, Leslie decides that it would be good if he broke character and he started messing with the water bottle he was using to "urinate." The sketch was down the drain so we just filmed Leslie for a while. Why Its Funny: The whole water bottle sequence was ok, but this was not a sketch that we are proud to call our own.
7. ANGRY CANADIANS VENT THEIR ANGER THROUGH ART Memorable Quote: "Oh Canada...um....doot doot dooooo..." This one is short but sweet. The clever idea of an angry Canadian urinating on an Italian flag is a funny concept by itself. But, the fact that the man starts jumping wildly while doing his business AND singing "O Canada" does not hurt it at all. Why Its Funny: The premise is really good, and the performance was ok. |
