The Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act

The ACPA took effect in November of 1999. The act protects against infringement on tradmarks; specifically domain names. This act enables victims to pursue legal action upon the offender. It generally states that if you purposely create a domain name that is "confusingly similar" you are guilty.

Lets say I want to make some quick money. So I make a website called: "wikpedia.com" and I plan to sell it to Wikipedia. I would be in violation of the act because I made a confusing domain name and I plan to profit from it.

Here is a PowerPoint on the ACPA
