I must say I was VERY disappointed to read your sloppy reporting of the
case with Cashman. You seemed to leave out some VERY important parts to
this case. Maybe you didn't know about them. Maybe! Maybe I should fill
you in on them? Ahhh what the heck, I'll do it anyways.
1. The 34 year old "man" has a mind of a 12-14 year old "boy"...in other words...he is retarded...(excuse me if I'm not politically correct...but I'm not a politician so I don't have to play by the rules)..This "man" is stuck in a lifetime age of puberty! Remember puberty?
2. The parents of this girl knew the "man" was retarded and "showed an interest" in their daughter, YET, they allowed him to spend many hours with this girl...EVEN allowing the "man" and girl to sleep together on numerous occasions. Sounds to me like some neglect was going on here. But not once has any of the reporters mentioned the lack of supervision the parents gave to the girl! NOT once have the mass media questioned the actions (or lack thereof) of the parents. One must wonder if the parents are only screaming now to protect their neglect, as surely they must have suspected something. I mean afterall allowing a 34 yr old retarded man with the mentality of a 12-14 yr old boy to sleep with your daughter just doesn't add up to "nothing will happen"
3. IF Cashman had sentenced the "man" to prison, he would receive NO TREATMENT. Within 2-4 years he would be released (chances are much sooner), with NO treatment. More than 40% of sentenced offenders in Vermont serve their time under some form of supervised community release. The Corrections Treatment Offender Dept. listed him as low risk. In other words, a retarded 34 yr old "man" with the mentality of a 12-14 yr old "boy", will never do it again....PLEASE!!! Cashman knew what would happen. And chances are....this "boy" will always need supervision around children...as...mentally he is just a child himself.
I ask you to read this report on Vermont Corrections dated Feb 2005. The plans are to release even more "criminals" into the community...Surely for Cashman to allow this without treatment, would be a jeopardy to all children as well as a set up for failure to the "man"
Don't be so hasty to judge Cashman. I would surely like to read an update on your article without the harshness towards Cashman. And just possibly seeing the blame placed exactly were it belongs.
Sincerely,
Pauline in Vermont
