Title : Time Reversed Acoustics: Turning time back and some practical applications
Resume : We cannot exactly reverses the flow of time for solid
objects or particles. The precision with which it has to be done is beyond
the present capablities of technology. Waves however can be produced which
travel exactly along their original path but in a reverse direction. This
property of waves and particulary acoustic waves thus allows exact time
reversal. Reversing the direction of a wave can lead to many useful applications
in Marine Acoustics for communication between submarines, in medecine for
destroying cancers, kidney or gall stones or in non-destructive testing
for locating material faults. Prof Fink will discuss some of these applications
and the potential of Time Reversed Acoustics in other practical areas.
Mathias Fink is the director of the Laboratoire des OndesAcoustiques
at Paris VII, where he has developed the science of Time Reversed Acoustics.
Ths technique allows acoustic waves to be reversed in direction and play
back to simulate time running backwards. The results of this work have
made Professor Fink a very prominent scientist in the filed of acoustics
and has resulted in many awards recognizing his work. Proifessor Fink is
visiting Perth on a grant awarded by the French Embassy inaustralia, as
part of a collaboration between Curtin University and Paris VII. this collaboration
is aimed at developing the application of Time Reversed Acoustics in Geophysics.
Professor Fink's interest in the application of acoustics reaches far beyond
geophysical application to encompass medical ultrasounds, non-destructive
testing, marine acoustics as well as fundemental investigation in Physics.
