Stop the Constitutional Amendment Banning Gay Marriage.

There is currently underway in congress a movement to pass a constitutional amendment. This amendment is being sold to the American people as a ban on gay marriage, but it is much worse than that. The full text is: "Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this Constitution or the constitution of any state, nor state or federal law, shale be construed to require that marital status or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon unmarried couples or groups.�

This amendment would ban any right conferred by marriage to people of the same sex. No same-sex health insurance coverage, no visitation rights, no inheritance, no co-adoption, no co-ownership, no spousal privilege, no �civil unions,� and no �domestic partnerships.� This amendment would repeal hundreds of state, county, and municipal laws already on the books, and make 5-10% of Americans true second-class citizens. Here�s why you should be opposed to this:

Homosexuality is not a choice. Let�s get that out of the way right away. The only choice Homosexual people have is to be honest with themselves and others, or to live in denial - a very unhealthy place to live, and where many who chose to live there die quickly. Medical, Genetic, and other scientific studies show that homosexuality (and this can be applied to bisexuality, gender identity, and other sexual-related differences from the majority) is assigned in the brain before birth. No one is �turned� gay. You either are, or you aren�t (or you�re bisexual).

Homosexuality is natural. Natural means to exist in nature, and homosexuality (and other non-majority variations) exist in many species of mammals and birds. Sex fluidity (changing sex) exists in reptiles and fish. Homosexuality doesn�t seem natural to heterosexuals, but heterosexuality doesn�t seem natural to homosexuals.

Homosexuality is a natural variation in sexual behavior that is inborn, exactly like being left-handed. People don�t choose to be left-handed. Why would they? Everything in the world is designed for the right-handed majority. While left-handed people were once shunned and considered evil in many primitive societies, we now understand that it is a natural (existing in nature) minority variation. Being attracted to the same sex is no different from preferring to write with your left hand, or liking carrots instead of peas, or liking red-heads, tall men, big breasts, or any other preference that is inborn. The next time someone makes a sweeping statement about gays, substitute the word �left-handed� for the word �gay� or �lesbian� or �homosexual� and you�ll see how sill all the fear and hatred are.

Since homosexuals are a type of person, created that way, they should be allowed to have the same rights as everyone else in our society. They should be allowed to hold a job, buy a house, raise a family, serve our country in office and the military, and enter into the civil institution known as marriage. There is no logical basis to continue these discriminations. They must end.

If this constitutional amendment is passed, America would no longer be a beacon of freedom to oppressed people worldwide. It would no longer be the home of the free - only the 90% free.
