Jasper
The "Old Jail" in Jasper,
site of the last legal hanging in Florida.
Tours are given by volunteers, no charge - donations gladly accepted.
The jail was built in 1893 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  The structure was home to the local sheriff and his family and inmate meals were prepared in the cracker kitchen.  There is also an Indian Room at the site with authentic Indian artifacts and items of historical appeal.
Actual photographs are on hand of the last legal hanging in Florida along with the legendary hangman's noose.
Those criminals who did not face the thirteen knots of the noose were kept in a dungeon located under the buidling.

Site of an old cotton gin mill is located across from the old jail.  Visitors can get a glimpse of pioneer time in the area.

Also on the property is a collection of old farm equipment.
Jasper is located in Hamilton County in north Florida.

Another interesting sight is the Alapaha River is located near Jasper in Hamilton County.  This unique river is also known as the "River of Sand" as it looses all of its water into the limestone caverns beneath during certain periods of the year.
