Barbarians have arrived and
have been arriving through the centuries,
always from the East,
and sometimes from the West
across the great ocean,
they arrive, always bearing gifts,
gifts cloaked in primitive wisdom,
gifts of death.
And as the empires of the West dine,
devouring the innocent,
throwing scraps to their wild beasts,
and applauding their demagogues whose mouths
smell like death,
Hellenic humanism is left alone once again
to defend the gates of civilization,
from the beasts arriving from the East.
