Probably the strangest thing
on that planet were the people.
They had surface but no volume, light as feathers.
When I inquired about their shape
they responded with these words:
-There is no good, there is no evil,
but there is right and there is wrong.
Our shape simply lets us flow
from right to wrong with a slight wind,
ever-changing, everlasting, the will of the Gods.
-How about your will? I asked
You must be able to tell right and wrong apart?
Isn’t the effect, after all, which determines the
rightness of the act? Isn’t there an ultimate purpose
to your existence? Shouldn’t your actions
be in accordance with that intention?
-You are naïve my friend, they responded,
for right is wrong and wrong is right. The wind
decides and who are we to doubt the wisdom of the
wind? It is much easier to follow. That is what we do; we follow
the desires of the wind.
I understood at that moment the purpose of my
two-dimensional friends. In fact there was never
any purpose to their existence other than establishing
the presence of the wind. The wind existed because
of them and they existed because of the wind.
-Randomness my friend is the essence! One of them
yelled before he blew away.
Nonsense, I murmured, for there is always order hiding in randomness
and the essence is not the randomness but the hidden order. I
knew though that my two-dimensional friends would not
understand the concept – it is much easier to follow the path of the wind.
