Who invented fiberglass? The first invention of fiberglass was done by R. Games Slaytor in 1897. However fiberglass did not begin to be manufactured until almost 35 years later. In 1932 an Owen's-Illinois researcher called Dale Kleist accidentally discovered how to make fiberglass. Kleist was attempting to weld together architectural glass blocks to form a vacuum-tight seal when a stream of compressed air mistakenly hit a line of molten glass he was working with. This accident resulted in small glass fibers. Kleist then began to remodel the utilization process using steam instead of air as it created a finer fiber and costed less. The glass fibers created had a small size enabling them to be able to be used in commercial insulation. In 1935 Corning Glass joined forces with Owens-Illinois to further researching together. The companies started to experiment in the late 30s and early 40s with creating a cloth like material made by spinning the fibers. Eventually, products such as insulation in buildings, RVs, boats, and pools were able to be made and maufactored. HOME (http://www.sunpools.com/why.html) |
