Ice storms, also referred to as glaze storms, are more common in the valleys and foothills. Ice storms are caused by general weather patterns. Ice accumulates when supercold rain freezes on contact with surfaces, such as tree branches, that are below the freezing point. This occurs when a winter front passes through an area after ground-level falls below freezing. The type of precipitation depends on the depth of the cold air. At first it is often deep enough for snow but the warm air associated with nearing storms erodes the cold air and the cold air mass gets shallower and shallower. Soon it is no longer snow but rain falling into cold air and the rain droplets freeze into small pellets known as sleet.
