| Game, '09 Series Go to Arsenal DAVIS, Calif., Sept. 23, 2009 (AP) -- Lack of finishing stymied FC Sudwerk on Wednesday night, as the red-and-black fell to archrivals Arsenal 4-2 despite creating numerous shots and scoring opportunities that failed to hit the mark. Mistakes set the tone early in this clash of DARSL titans, with Sudwerk getting on the board first on an Arsenal own goal and the Gunners rallying back to take a 2-1 lead after red-and-black defender Andrew LaMar collided with goalie Debbie Daniels to leave an easy open shot in the goalie box. Arsenal padded its margin with a lovely goal in the 39th minute when a low cross from the right flank was gathered and then played off in a square pass to a wide-open Gunner 10 yards from the net. Sudwerk had its own chances, with striker J.B. Rudell hitting the cross bar from six yards out and coming close on two other blistering shots. In the second half, Sudwerk relied on wing play and the speed of David Jagdeo to generate scoring chances while Arsenal stuck with a possession game and nicely coordinated passing through central midfield. Jagdeo delivered Sudwerks second goal in the 86th minute on a superb individual effort. Jagdeo charged the Gunners keeper as she attempted a clearance kick, and when the ball caromed off Jagdeo, he slammed it into the right side of the net from wide left of goal. Daniels, the red-and-blacks much-bruised goalkeeping warrior, had another outstanding performance that was highlighted by stopping a shot from Arsenal ace Ben Sadrian, as he raced towards goal on a breakaway. Davis soccer legend Raul scored Arsenals final goal on a curving shot into the right roof of the net from the 18. Raul, who is moving to Vancouver, is a long-time fixture of the Davis adult soccer scene who has played for nearly every DARSL team, including FC Sudwerk. His Arsenal teammates bid him farewell with a raucous cheer at the games conclusion. Arsenal owned the rivalry with Sudwerk this year, winning three of the four matches between the two clubs. But that doesnt mean we cant drink together, which is exactly what many participants in this great matchup did Wednesday night. Prost! Well get you next year, Arsenal. ## |
