| FC Sudwerk sold to CalPERS, Werdna ousted as manager DAVIS, Calif., Sept. 15 (AP) CalPERS, the nation's largest pension fund, purchased a controlling interest in the struggling FC Sudwerk soccer club on Wednesday and immediately dismissed its colorful CEO Ramal Werdna. "We think this is a fine investment with great potential," said Brad Pacheco, the pension fund's spokesman. "This was clearly an undervalued stock for an operation with global reach." Werdna, a former Bundesliga star who launched the club with much fanfare three years ago, could not be reached for comment. He has endured constant criticism for the team's inconsistent play, but has turned the venture into a money-maker with an international following. Meanwhile, the CalPERS board named famed Brazilian defender Juan Carlos as the club's new CEO and president. "I am both honored and thrilled to lead FC Sudwerk," Carlos said. "Already, in three short years, the red-and-black have a tremendous tradition, and I plan to build on that." The club begins its 13th season on Friday. ## |
