| Sudwerk Marks 3rd Year With Sparkling Victory DAVIS, Calif., Aug. 6 (Reuters) FC Sudwerk celebrated its third anniversary Friday night with a spectacular 4-3 victory over Positrons. The red-and-black sealed the win in the 89th minute, when Matt Shuplock dribbled through the Positrons midfield and split two defenders with a blistering shot from the 18-yard line that rocketed into the top of the net. It was his second goal of the night. What a great birthday present, said Ramal Werdna, the president and CEO of FC Sudwerk. This was a fantastic game. Both teams played their hearts out, and we deserved this result. Sudwerk led 2-0 at halftime, thanks to goals by Craig Dandurand and J.B. Rudell. Dandurand deflected the ball into the net in the 20th minute after crashing the goal on a cross from J.B. Rudell. Dandurand returned the favor in the 44th minute by lofting a 20-yard pass from the left flank that Rudell headed home from the 6-yard line. But Positrons rallied midway through the second half, scoring in the 68th and 70th minutes to draw level. The resurgence, however, was answered by Shuplock, who scored his first goal of the night on an impressive 25-yard free kick. The 74th minute play, from the left side of the center of the field, resembled a professional set piece. Chris Lief pushed his way into the right side of the wall and then ducked out of the way as Shuplocks shot bent around the edge of the wall and into the bottom right corner of the goal. Weve scored on lots of free kicks, but thats the best execution Ive seen in a long time, Werdna said. The resilient, black-shirted Positrons battled back yet again, managing to tie the game on controversial play five minutes later. Sweeper Adam Bauer fell and appeared injured as Positrons advanced the ball 40 yards from Sudwerks goal. The red-and-blacks defense stopped to attend to Bauer but Positrons played on, lobbing a pass to a striker clearly in an off-sides position who then beat goalie Rosie Matli. Distracted by Bauer, the head referee and linesman did not blow their whistles and allowed the goal to stand. The games final minutes featured frantic back-and-forth action with both teams creating excellent scoring chances. Positrons wasted a brilliant opportunity when a black-clad attacker sliced through the Sudwerk back line only to see a wide-open, 10-yard shot carom off the post. A draw looked imminent until Shuplock received the ball just over the half line and outsprinted Positrons midfielders down the left side. He cut back to the center of the field near the top of the box before unleashing the game-winner. The win improves Sudwerks summer record to 3-4-0. Afterward, the club visited the world-renowned Sudwerk Restaurant and Brewery and toasted Fridays outstanding showing and the culmination of three years of inspired soccer-playing, beer-drinking and team-building. Prost! ## |
