Sudwerk Falls in Shoot-Out

DAVIS, Calif., Aug. 1 (Reuters) -- FC Sudwerk gave up a record number of goals Friday night, losing 11-7 to Cosmos and dropping to 1-3 on summer season.

The defensive effort was the poorest ever by Sudwerk, which closed out last fall with a resounding 10-0 defeat but has never allowed more goals than that.

"Obviously we're going to have to dramatically remake our defense," said Ramal Werdna, FC Sudwerk's president and CEO. "Still, I'm proud of our offense, which demonstrated some real flair and finishing abilities."

Balta Silva continued his summer tear, netting six goals, and skipper Andrew LaMar capped the red-and-black's scoring with a goal in the 90th minute.

The game appeared even early in the second half, when Sudwerk scored twice to take the lead 4-3. But soon after, Cosmos went on a rampage, scoring at will with skillful play from its strikers.

The red-and-black rallied back to a 9-6 deficit but could not stop the Cosmos' attack.

Sudwerk's next game is 9:30 p.m. Wednesday against Arsenal.   ##
