Gutsy Effort Not Enough

DAVIS, Calif., July 9 (Reuters) FC Sudwerk delivered its finest peformance in months Friday night but could not overcome resilient Davis Football Club, which held on for a 2-1 victory.

"That's the best soccer I've seen this club play all year," said Ramal Werdna, the president and CEO of FC Sudwerk. "We would have liked to win, but there's no shame in that loss."

The red-and-black displayed dominating defense, patiently built its attack from the back line and passed crisply and cohesively through the midfield.

Sudwerk looked the superior side, especially in the second half, when it attacked in waves and limited DFC to a couple of  shots. Sudwerk had a chance to tie the game with a penatly kick in the 90th minute, but Nicolas Darcel's low drive was neatly deflected by the foot of the DFC keeper.

"So many played great," Werdna said. "Clearly J.C. Mark and Adam Bauer were the players of the match for Sudwerk. That's the best defense this club has seen in a long time."

Sudwerk's next match is 6:15 p.m. Wednesday against Mooninites. ##
