| Rudell Fuels Sudwerk Victory
DAVIS, Calif., July 20 (Reuters) -- Striker extraordinaire J.B. Rudell scored twice in two minutes to lead FC Sudwerk to its first victory of the season Wednesday. The red-and-black defeated Positrons 2-1, thanks to Rudell and Sudwerk goalie Craig Dandurand, who made two spectacular saves to ensure the result. The win improved Sudwerk's summer record to 1-1. "Everything came together tonight,'' said Juan Carlos, FC Sudwerk president and CEO. "We had a dynamic side that worked hard, marked well and passed efficiently. Hopefully we can build on that as the season progresses.'' The scoring started in the 10th minute when Positrons' right back misjudged a ball that bounced over his head. Rudell raced in, chested the ball and then booted a rocket into the net from 18 yards. Just two minutes later, Rudell finished a terrific cross from midfielder Leon Shahinian, who took a ball at the half line and sprinted down the right wing. As defenders converged, Shahinian played the ball into the left side of the box to Rudell, who settled it with one touch and then neatly placed a shot inside the left post. Led by Dandurand and sweeper Adam Bauer, the Sudwerk defense proved formidable, marking well and leaving Positrons few scoring chances. Positrons drew within one goal, however, when a short corner kick fell to a black-shirted attacker, who directed a shot into left side netting. Although the spirited match was up for grabs until the final whistle, Sudwerk dominated play and controlled the ball for long stretches by linking together crisp passes. In addition, midfielder Mel Meyer held the ball well, often thwarting double- and triple- teaming. The game marked the return of Andrew LaMar, who rejoined the lineup after a two-month absence. He made his presence felt by delivering several long through balls and free kicks. Sudwerk's next match is 7 p.m. Wednesday against Purple Haze. ## |
