Big Rally Comes Up Short

DAVIS, Calif., July 18 (AP) -- FC Sudwerk staged a valiant comeback but came up shy on Friday, falling 6-5 to Purple Haze.

The red-and-black gave up four goals before coming to life late in the first half. John Sylvain, on loan from Oldenfowl, scored Sudwerk's first goal after taking a feed from Andrew LaMar in the box.

At the break, Sudwerk trailed 5-1. In the second half, though, the red-and-black stepped up its attack and made increasingly dangerous forays into Purple Haze's penalty area.

Balta Silva, on loan to Sudwerk from the Mexican powerhouse Morelia Monarcas, dazzled defenders with his foot speed and skill. Silva tallied four goals, all after juking defenders in the box.

Sudwerk rallied to a 5-4 deficit in the 80th minute only to see Purple Haze score two minutes later on a free kick 25 yards from goal. Silva delivered his final strike in the 90th minute.

"I am proud of this effort," said Ramal Werdna, the club president and CEO. "This team showed some real heart."

Sudwerk's next game is 9 p.m. on Friday.  ##
