Sudwerk Stumbles
in Summer Opener

DAVIS, Calif., July 13, 2006 (AP) -- FC Sudwerk kicked off its summer season Thursday with a disappointing loss to rivals Davis Football Club, falling 5-1 to the blue and white.

Missing several of its top players, the red-and-black struggled to find a rhythm and pass cohesively. Nonetheless, Sudwerk created many scoring opportunities, and striker Phil Pareas netted a spectacular goal on a 40-yard shot that caught the keeper out of position midway through the first half.

Play appeared rather even through the early going, with Sudwerk trailing 2-1 at the break. But Davis FC broke down the red-and-black's defense with an efficient passing attack in the second half and scored three unanswered goals.

"Clearly, we were not well organized tonight," said Juan Carlos, the president and CEO of FC Sudwerk. "The club gave a good effort and played well despite being without many of its regulars."

"The game was more even than the score line suggests," Carlos added. "But credit goes to DFC, because they did outplay us." ##
