| Sudwerk Thrashed in Opener DAVIS, Calif., July 11 (Reuters) -- FC Sudwerk opened the summer season on Friday with a 9-2 loss to Lobos, which dominated the red-and-black with its speed and skillful passing. Sudwerk held its own in the first half and trailed 3-2 at the break. Striker Phil Pareas scored the club's two goals, with the second coming on a beautiful header from 10 yards out. The Lobos' high-octane offense wore down the red-and-black in the second half, however, and gave goalkeeper Joncarlo Mark a workout. Mark responded by making several spectacular diving saves and distinguished himself as the player of the match for Sudwerk. The defeat continued an FC Sudwerk tradition of losing the season opener. In its eight seasons, Sudwerk has lost seven of its first games. The red-and-black dropped its first game of spring 6-0 but rebounded to record a 5-3 mark for the season. Sudwerk's next game is 9 p.m. on Friday. ## |
