Oldenfowl Snaps Sudwerk's Streak

DAVIS, Calif., June 29 (Reuters) -- FC Sudwerk concluded a successful spring season on Sunday with a disappointing 4-0 loss to Oldenfowl.

The defeat dropped the red-and-black to 5-3 overall and ended the club's winning streak at four. It also marked the second consecutive season-ending setback to Oldenfowl, which walloped the red-and-black 17-4 to close out the winter indoor campaign in March.

"We had hoped for a better result than this," said Ramal Werdna, the president and CEO of FC Sudwerk. "But, it doesn't take anything away from a spectacular season. I'm proud of what we accomplished this spring."

The club's 5-win-3-loss record represents its best finish since joining DARSL over a year ago.

Sudwerk dominated in the early going and came close to scoring on at least two occasions. On one, a 30-yard half-volley by Andrew LaMar caught the goalie out of position and went one yard wide of the left post.

On another, Oldenfowl's goalie barely tipped the ball over the crossbar after Sudwerk striker Julia Sway launched a rocket from the right side.

As the half wore on, Oldenfowl stepped up its offense. The Blues got the break they needed when sweeper Andrew LaMar inadvertantly deflected a ball onto the feet of a wide open striker in the box, who buried the shot.

Oldenfowl's confidence grew in the second half and it attacked with greater vigor. Its second goal came on a beautiful one-two pass that sprung a striker free near the top of the box, and he chipped a shot over goalie Chris Lief into the back of the net.

Sudwerk had its opportunities but couldn't convert. Striker Phil Pareas saw his hard low shot cleared off the goal line, after a scramble in front of the net.

Oldenfowl scored its final two goals on defensive breakdowns as Sudwerk tired.

"With a few breaks, this game certainly could have gone the other way," Werdna said. "Now we look forward to continuing our success in the summer."

Sumer season will begin July 9 and run through Sept. 19.
