Rubio to the Rescue, Part II
DAVIS, Calif., June 1 (Reuters) -- David Rubio scored twice for the second consecutive game to lift FC Sudwerk to a 2-1 victory over Leaping Lizards on Sunday.
Rubio entered the game late in the first half as sweeper and immediately had an impact. He made a run through Lizards' defense, took a feed from Leon Shahinian and blasted a shot from 15 yards to tie the game at 1.
Early in the second half, Rubio delivered the game winner by heading home a corner kick nicely taken by Phil Pareas.
On defense, the red-and-black held tough, thanks to outstanding play by sweeper Patrick Chandler, on loan for one final game with his old club, and goalkeeper Craig Dandurand.
In addition, Sudwerk's women demonstrated phenomenal endurance, playing the entire game in 90-degree heat without subs.
The win improves the club's spring record to 3-0-2.
Sudwerk's next game is at 10 a.m. Sunday, June 8, against the highly regarded Davis Football Club.
