| Sudwerk Shines In Opener DAVIS, Calif., May 7 (Reuters) -- FC Sudwerk bounced back from a two-goal deficit to defeat Renegade 6-4 in a spectacular start to its spring season on Sunday. Imer and J.B. Rudell lead the red-and-black by scoring two goals apiece and Adam Bauer and Andrew LaMar added two more, as Sudwerk rallied after falling behind 4-2 at the break. "What a testimony to the spirit of this team," said Juan Carlos, president and CEO of FC Sudwerk. "This was a gutty performance that was a delight to behold." In true Sudwerk fashion, the game included several quirky turns and a few major defensive lapses, but the red-and-black prevailed thanks to its strong midfield play and sensational finishing. Rudell sealed the victory midway through the second half with an elegant chip shot from 20 yards out right of goal that arched over a charging goalkeeper and into the back of the net. Rudell's shot capped a splendid buildup that began when center back Max Simmons intercepted a pass near the Sudwerk penalty area. He slid a pass to right back Juan Carlos, who played the ball to midfielder Imer. Imer in turn played a one-two with right winger Allison Skavdal and then fed a streaking Rudell. "That was poetry in motion," said Carlos, the club president. "That was such a beautiful buildup and finish I nearly cried!" Left winger Bauer delivered an insurance goal a few minutes later with a similar chip shot from left of goal. For the final 20 minutes, Renegade attacked relentlessly but was stifled by the Sudwerk defense. "Game balls to all Sudwerk's newcomers - Max Simmons, Allison Skavdal and Alinia and Vigdis Asmundson - who delivered solid performances in their club debut," Carlos said. Kudos also to goalkeeper Craig Dandurand, who stopped a penalty kick with a remarkable diving save to his left in the first half. The kick was awarded when sweeper LaMar, standing at the goal line, used his hand to block a sure goal. LaMar made up for the misdeed by scoring on a penalty kick in the second half, after Rudell was brought down in the box. ## |
