| Hard Luck for Red Shirts DAVIS, Calif., May 2 (Reuters) FC Sudwerk dazzled fans with brilliant new red jerseys Sunday but fell 2-1 to a resilient Short Grass side that bounced back from an early deficit. For the second straight week, the red-and-black controlled the run of the play and appeared deserving of victory. However, unlike its season opener, Sudwerk suffered tough luck and could not capitalize on several scoring opportunities. The red-and-black missed a penalty kick and striker Joseph L'Amour hit a beautiful shot that caromed off the cross bar and left post before returning to the field of play. Sudwerk scored first in the 6th minute when forward Phil Pareas ran onto a terrific curving cross from Mel Meyer, who bent the ball over the Short Grass back line and into Pareas' path at the 6-yard line. Pareas tapped the ball past the keeper and slid it into the net. In the second half, Short Grass scored two goals on breakaways, with the second coming on a controversial no-call on offsides. Sudwerk continues spring season with a match against Eagles next Sunday at 10 a.m. ## |
