Rubio to the Rescue
DAVIS, Calif., May 18 (AP) -- David Rubio scored twice in his debut with FC Sudwerk, including a spectacular header, as the red-and-black defeated Short Grass 3-0 on Sunday.
Sudwerk controlled much of the play but needed two terrific saves by goalkeeper Chris Lief to record the shutout.
The red-and-black opened the scoring midway through the first half when Phil Pareas took advantage of windy conditions to curve a shot inside the left post from the left flank, a trajectory that clearly stunned the keeper.
But the most dazzling play came later in the half, when Julia Sway lofted a cross from the right side that Rubio headed home from 10 yards out. Rubio struck again early in the second half, when he directed a low cross from the left side into goal from the six yard line.
     Sudwerk's next game is 2 p.m. Sunday, June 1.
