Sudwerk Scores, Scores, Scores

DAVIS, Calif., May 14 (Reuters) -- J.B. Rudell recorded a hat trick and Adam Bauer added two goals as FC Sudwerk's offense powered the red-and-black to an 8-3 victory over Short Grass on Sunday.

But despite all its finishing, Sudwerk struggled to fight off a second-half Short Grass rally, with goalkeeper Jocarlo Mark stopping two penalty kicks and denying two other almost-certain goals with amazing punch saves.

In addition, Sudwerk benefited from outstanding performances by its women, who were forced to play the full 90 without subs. (Welcome to the team Alinia and Vigdis!)

"I thought we moved the ball around well in the first half," said Juan Carlos, president and CEO of FC Sudwerk. "It got a little sloppy and lethargic out there in the second half, but that happens sometimes."

Short Grass got off to an unlucky start when its sweeper scored an own goal on an attempted clearance in the 5th minute. Sudwerk added four more in the first half, with Rudell scoring twice and Imer and Alex Park also rippling the net, as the red-and-black dominated midfield.

The second half, though, dragged on -- was that only 45 minutes?! -- as the heat slowed play and reduced each team mostly to counterattacking. Short Grass had plenty of chances, including the two PKs, but couldn't take advantage.

Sudwerk had lots of great goals, but the Goal of the Day, in my mind, was Park's first-half header from just inside the 18. He made a great run into the box, cleverly stepping in front of a pursuing defender to reach the cross he knew was coming. Nice!

Game balls to Rudell, Mark and Sudwerk's Iron Four -- Renae Wurschmidt Owens, Mel Meyer and Alinia and Vigdis Asmundson. Way to go! ##
