| . . . And Red Claims Victory, 10-8 DAVIS, Calif., April 5, 2009 (Reuters) -- DARSL superstars Culien Ortiz and Erica Brown were sent off for fighting Sunday in a vicious Red-Black intrasquad slugfest that spilled over to postgame events at the Sudwerk Restaurant and Brewery. Ortiz, a two-sport athlete who cut short her pro ski season to participate in the renowned rivalry game, found herself at the receiving end of an unprovoked elbow from Brown and had no choice but to retaliate. The two were pulled apart by teammates and quickly shown red cards. But the dispute didn't end there. The two famous friends got into it at the club's after party -- a bawdy bash held immediately following the annual match -- when Ortiz claimed that Sudwerk's Hefe Weizen, an unfiltered wheat beer with a dry and refreshing finish, was vastly superior to its Marzen, an amber lager with rich, robust malt character. Brown, a Marzen fan, refused to leave well enough alone and traded blows with Ortiz in the Sudwerk parking lot. "There's no denying this team's passion!" said club President and CEO Zitro Neiluc, who laughed off the incident. "A team that drinks together . . . uh, stays together, most of the time." Neiluc, however, did fine both players. They will be required to buy the first round after FC Sudwerk's first game of the "summer 2009" outdoor season, due to begin in October 2011, when the City of Davis receives its federal economic stimulus funding and can complete the renovation of Playfields Park. In other news, Red defeated Black 10-8 in what was primarily an exchange of goals between talented scorers David Jagdeo and J.B. Rudell. The faces of goalkeepers Debbie Daniels and Craig Dandurand made many fine saves. Black was hampered by the absence of Renae Wurschmidt Owens, who was being held hostage by a group of teenagers claiming to be a church group, and team manager and talisman Andrew LaMar, who was detained by the California Highway Patrol on what LaMar claimed to be "a huge misunderstanding." Additional details on LaMar's detention were not available at press time. ## |
