Sudwerk Sparkles in Opener

DAVIS, Calif., April 25 (AP)   FC Sudwerk scintillated Sunday, passing crisply and controlling play, as it downed Oldenfowl 3-1 in its first match of the spring season.

Veteran midfielder Andreas Agocs led the red-and-black with two goals and an assist. He set the tone in the 11th minute when he found forward Phil Pareas 10 yards from goal with a clinical cross from the right flank that Pareas headed into the left side of the net for Sudwerk's first score.

In the second half, Agocs notched the game winner after a terrific build up on the left flank. He received the ball in the box, where he took a touch and buried a shot into the roof of the net. He later added an insurance goal.

Sweeper Donn Cox, stopper Adam Bauer and goalie Chris Lief anchored a solid defensive effort, as Sudwerk turned away Oldenfowl's counterattacks in tiring 90-degree heat.

The red-and-black will face Short Grass next week, when the club will unveil its new red jerseys. Kickoff is at noon. ##
