| Andre Press Sports Ticker Woodland Blanks Sudwerk By Joseph Hunter AP Soccer Writer DAVIS, Calif., Feb. 5 -- Beleaguered FC Sudwerk, hit by injuries and absences, dropped its second game of the season on Tuesday night, losing 4-0 to Woodland, and slid into fourth place. Sudwerk, which had to use a walk-on to field a full side, generally defended well but had trouble on offense, failing to produce much of an attack. Woodland outshot Sudwerk 22-14 and led 1-0 at halftime. The club, led by Jeff Henderson's three goals, sailed to victory in the second half by intelligently using space in the offensive zone and exploiting a couple of Sudwerk's defensive lapses. "This is tremendously discouraging," said Ramal Werdna, FC Sudwerk's president and CEO. "Three of our key players are injured, our offense is ineffective and we're just not playing well together as a team." On Tuesday, Sudwerk was without the services of Chris Lief, Joncarlo Mark, Dave Raybould and Bruce Berry. In addition, in order to field a squad, Sudwerk put two injured players in the lineup, Andrew LaMar and Armando Murrieta, who are recovering from strained knees. The decision proved to be a poor one, as Murrieta re-injured his right knee in the second half, was forced to limp off the pitch and will likely miss next week's match. LaMar, relegated to playing goalie due to his limited mobility, gave up two easy goals but also managed to deliver two diving saves. "Obviously, this was not our best lineup out there," Werdna said. "Still, there's no doubt we have fallen short of the high expectations this team had at the beginning of the season. We need to get our players healthy, shore up our offense and improve our play in coming weeks so we can enter the playoffs strong." On the bright said, LaMar experienced little pain in his right knee Wednesday morning and said he will probably be available as a sub for field play next week. In other action Tuesday night, Davis United crushed Big Pern's Posse 10-1 and Julie's Coeds won by forfeit 1-0 over River Plate, which has dropped out of the league. Sudwerk faces Big Pern's Posse at 8:45 p.m. next Tuesday. ## |
